What is this canister in my engine bay?

Hi. I have a 95 240sx LE. What's the canister in the engine bay on the drivers side, kind of behind the headlight and beside the radiator? It's approximately 3 inches wide, and 6 inches tall. It has 3 hoses on the top and 1 on the bottom. 2 of the hoses are connected to hard lines. I notice a lot of other S14's don't have this canister thing so can I take it out too? If I do take it out, any special things I have to do like plugging up those hardlines? Thanks.

black is charcoal evaporative canister. I would keep it. It recirculates the gas fumes.

Thanks, I had a feeling that's what it was. It's gotta come out though; gotta make room for an air filter for the SR.

The two vacuum lines need to be plugged, the emissions hardline can be removed from the engine bay, it runs to a small section of hose underneath the passenger side firewall before going into another hardline. Just make sure it's left open to vent, otherwise fuel vapor will pressurize in the line, causing blowoff when you open the gas cap. You can get more involved and remove the entire hardline from under the car all the way back to the tank, then leave the last piece of hose tucked away in the frame rail somewhere.

The carbon canister's purpose is to draw out fuel vapors from the tank during driving and reburn them in the engine to reduce the emissions. The drawback of course is you're burning it in the engine, leaving soot and residue in the intake manifold. The overall effects of taking it out are negligable, no worse than the output from the exhaust system.

Naw, I'm just bored since I've already answered chit on FA, and this is the only other decent forum, although decent is really stretching it. There's still a million 16yr old tools asking the same damn questions we answered 15 years ago.

^^^ buy wild cams and get loads of headwork.
the information he gave was not a 240sx specific thing, that is general emissions equipment. it is as standard on a car as a catalytic converter. what i dont understand is how it would create soot and residue in the intake manifold. is it particles of charcoal picked up by the fuel through the charcoal canister? i also just dont understand how the charcoal canister actually attracts the fuel vapors to it. if you have an explination of all of that i would appreciate it = )

The canister has two vacuum lines on top of it. Under normal driving, the vacuum pulls the vapors out of the tank through the hardline that runs out the bottom of the canister.

Fuel vapors are dirty, just like crankcase blowby or the remnants that come out of the PCV valve, combined together and drawn into the intake it all creates sludge. My engine does not have any of this routed back in anymore, last time I pulled the intake manifold it off it was as clean as it was a year ago.

Yud- I've owned 240s for 11 years now.
