If you pull out the shifter which is attached to the plate, the plate will be left on.

When I installed my B&M, like someone mentioned before I used a hole saw to cut perfect holes in the transmission housing metal directly above the two front bolts and used a socket to remove. However, to prevent rust and avoid a sloppy look, I sanded, primed, and painted the surrounding holes and area. I then installed two capped rubber grommets around the holes...done. This is all to avoid dropping the transmission if you dont have much room to work with.
