The VLSD doesn't require LSD additive.  LSD additive is for clutch-type LSD's.  The viscous coupling inside is sealed and filled with a silicone fluid.  If the vicsous coupling breaks, it can't be rebuilt.

Other things could cause a noise like that, though.  Improper sideloading of the gears, U-joints, CV joints.
