There's such a difference between the rental car special model and the sport models it isn't funny.  Subtle differences.. 18hp here, a rear sway bar there, a dash of 3.94 gears.. it totally transforms the car.  Not all Neons are bad at everything.  I'd buy another in a heartbeat if something happened to my GTI.
