"fixies" are a trend, they'll go back to just being used by couriers soon enough. it's more fashion statement than anything. that doesn't apply to road bikes in general, though. i keep my seat relatively low on my "road" bike (read: mountain bike with smooth tires and road handlebars), i hate sitting up high like that.

in cities where your drive isn't more than a few miles it makes sense. here in STL, unless you live IN the city they're pretty useless for transportation. i ride my bikes to the grocery store, but that's about it. i mostly just ride for exercise and fun... and using a bike to commute is a great idea if you like being sweaty and gross at work.
