The stock pan is fine as long as it's not dented in. The only real downside is no increased capacity of aftermarket pans. It's recommended that you use the the later pickup tube as it is better reinforced as well as having a different cutout that prevents it from being completely blocked off if the pan contacts it (you can mod a stock redtop p/u like this as well). If you stock pan is dented just bash it back into shape with a hammer and a phonebook.
