Switching to synthetic is as easy as draining old conventional oil, replace filter and pour synthetic in.

Go here to read more about synthetic oil myths.

I have also heard great things about AMSOIL

1. Drain the dirty oil.
2. Replace the drain bolt and refill with Castrol Syntec Blend 10W-30. (I had this stuff sitting in the trunk of my car for a while.)
3. Run the car with the new blend oil until ideal temperature.
4. Drain the oil again.
5. Replace the oil filter. (I used a Wix filter, if anyone was wondering.)
6. Refill with Amsoil XL 10W-30 full synthetic oil.
7. Put the oil cap back on, run the car until oil temperature is ideal, then check the level of oil via dipstick.

Through both the oil steps, we used exactly 4 quarts for each refill. That seems to do the trick.

I've heard good things about Amsoil, so I'm giving it a whirl.
