Its a lot easier to drill out those stock screw heads and take the tape deck out that way.. You pretty much can't remove it without stripping the heads, so I just used a drill bit to take the heads off.
You didn't say what you were using, but a digital multimeter will be a terrific aid when you are diagnosing problems with your stereo.
