If you have PS7...
Your problem is that you've got the shape thing selected on pen tool. Select the pen tool and then look up in the top left corner of the screen and the first option should be selected. It's called "Create shape vector" or something to do with shapes. You've got to click the second option up there, that will let you just draw lines. I'm sorry I don't remember what they're called and I'm too lazy to check in Photoshop cause it takes like 10 minutes to load.
