Here's my approach to preventive maintenence:
If I think something is in need of replacement and that item is relatively cheap, like 9 bucks for a 300ZX TT fuel filter, go for it. There is not a lot of effort involved in changing it and in my case, there was no fuel spillage without draining anything, guess I was lucky though.
