No you don't need the cover. The gap between the tranny and shaft is ok, so you don't need to worry about it. There's no need to worry about a JDM shaft. Just worry about if all the sensors work, and timing, make sure all IC piping is tight and no leaks. Also prime the engine and blah blah..
