It depends on who you ask.

I think "selling out" is relinquishing creative control and making music that you don't agree with, making music the way someone else wants you to make it, in order to make more money.

Typically, guidelines and restrictions set forth by the record label, or producer, or whoever is paying you those millions, inhibit the creative process and lessen the quality of the music being made.

If you have an idea, and you put your heart and soul into translating it into music, and then the label/producer/figurehead says "we don't like it, change the whole album and make it like this, because we're paying you a ton of money"....it's probably going to suck.
