park your car on a flat/level surface(important). let it idle for about 5-10 min. check the dipstick for a SOLID fluid line(it may take a minute or two before all the fluid finds its way down). splotchy means that it indeed is just picking up from the sides of the tube. 8.3 qts is the fluid fill if your tranny is bone dry not on a regular drain/refill, which is more like 4 qts maybe less. as for the hot/cold fill line, the cold fill line would be when you just start the car in the morning and the entire engine/trans hasnt warmed up to full operating temp. hot would be when u let it idle for about 10 min. as long as u get a solid line in any of the ranges you should be okay, but shoot for full.
as for your problem, i would definatly start with fluid/filter(use nissan!). other possibilities can include valve body control solenoids being bad or possibly a sensor.
