From being waist deep in a crazy KA-T build, I'd reccomend getting a completed AMS short block or better.
Reasons are many, but for the most part, if you want to get accurate oil clearence in your bearings, you really should have the crank polished to match oversized bearings. NOT just throw in some standard and hope for the best. You could throw a bearing if you are out of spec.
All the issues with machine shop+ learning along the way really adds up in cost. ALSO the most important part of your engine is your Tune. Get a stand alone and a good O2 readout/log otherwise your car will suck. This goes even for the SR owners.
I ended up spending about $500 in machinist tools to check bore, oil clearence, fillet roll etc. And after checking a few hundred times, didn't feel comfortable with my 'precision tools', and am sending a 2nd block into a machine shop and getting the bottom end completed by people that have done it often.
PS, don't get 280 cams like I did. Little too wild in such you have to use a die grinder on the head to make them clear. A stage 2 cam should be enough for what you want to do. With dual springs and retainers.
PS, search, but do not post on this website.
