you gotta take off the tie rod end and slip the dust boot on, just be careful the mark the position of the rod end and locking nut. You can use white out, scratch a mark, or count threads, whatever. If you don't set the length back to what is was before then you will need to get an alignment. Also when taking off the rod ends it would be wise to replace the old cotter pins. Make sure the locking nut on the tie rod (the long rod section) is torqued down properly when you reassemble it. But, be carefulnot to overtighten the rod end (the ball joint).
