Yeah SAFC advances timing so be very careful when using one. They should be used strictly for very slight adjustments. My guess is knock especially if your advanced and low on fuel=knock city. I had the exact same problem with a different platform (mk2 mr2). Factory knock sensors were a huge fail in those cars. Replaced with a GM sensor and no more problems. Your problem sounds very similar, but definitely check for boost leak first and ecu codes.
