just do a compression test, and if everything's cool, slap a turbo on it. Use a MBC on it to keep the boost down to ~3-4psi. Until you get some fuel and engine management, keep it down. Your stock internals will be fine with proper tuning. TY Yap of Arizona has had a 300+whp KA24DE setup for years now, and it's ultra reliable.
