AFAIK, Koni yellows + Eibach sportlines is just about the best performance setup you can get for anywhere close to the $1000 range, even besting a lot of coilovers up to $2000. I'm actually in a similar situation as you with my S14, what with wanting something relatively cheap and not having much mechanic experience. Even so, I'm planning on going with Koni's and springs switched into stock housings as I've read a walkthrough and it doesn't seem that difficult to me, particularly since only the fronts have to be messed about with. YMMV of course.
