Any car you buy for 3-5k is a risk. I do agree with looking for something unmodded. Youll be spending thousands more fixing their problems. Im doing it now. Luckily i have another car
Do research on the car and have someone knowledgeable and blunt check it out with you
Might as well buy something you like and learn something along the way though
