Why does everyone say that? When they wrote the Constitution the founding fathers wanted to make sure that all states had fair representation. If the Electoral College wasn't used, the populations in smaller states would have no say and politicians would spend all their time and effort in population centers like NYC, Los Angeles, Chicago, etc...
