i believe the sound produced is becaused the pipe is acting as a reverberating chamber, basically, the sound is echoing in the pipe. IIRC, a mag, possibly SCC. had a article a year or 2 ago about how longer intake piping affected both volume and power. i believe they found the longer piping to add more power, and more power, but i could be wrong
