I had the same problem except i was all the time. I could only rev to 5K exactly and when I would punch the gas thick black smoke would come out of the exhaust!
When to the local junk yard and picked up a MAF sensor, installed it, reset the computer, drove very easy (never exciding 4Krpms) for about ten minutes and then it was fixed. The O2 sensor might help anyways and also a fuel filter, and complete tune up! I also used blaster fuel injector cleaner and some Z Max fuel system cleaner and it cleaned up the engine nicely and increased fuel economy as well!

Good to hear you finally got that thing straightened out. I was gonna say the same thing.. MAF probems..
