Yeah, it wouldn't take much to put the seagull out of its miserery. Don't be a wimp; the poor thing will suffer a lot less than if it's hobbling around for four hours before it dies. I would have just stomped its poor little head. Likewise the best way to deal with a hit deer if it's bad enough is a quick and relatively painless bullet through its head or barring that, slitting its throat.
But I hate birds, so I don't care.
