Maybe I'm just a little more liberal on this... but if it was done cleanly then I'd say go for it.  Now, if you're gonna throw a bunch of stickers and bling bling on the car... then no, but just a simple (looks simple, but isn't really) tail light swap then I'd respect it... maybe not like it (I'd have to see it) but I wouldn't call you a ricer for something that looked clean.
