Just to add, a pickle fork or ball joint remover (that looks like a big two pronged fork), is not meant to pull a ball joint that is intended to be used again.  It will tear up the boot requiring purchase of a new one (well two so they remain the same).

The way to removed a balljoint is to hit the knuckle around it with a hammer which will allow the ball joint shaft to come loose (unseated) the knuckle leaving the ball joint unbroken and ready to be reused (if it's still in good condition).
