You can do it that way, but you run the risk of pushing the nut on forcefully with the blow of a hammer, especially a mini-sledge. Thus stripping the threads on the axle. I'd say 95% of the time it works pretty good. But there's always that one time that the rust is just too much for it to budge with one hit. The more you wack at it the greater the risk. <= ha ha ha....
