If you have the money, get it serviced regularly by an experienced shop, they should be able to keep you on the up and up. SR20's are awesome reliable engines when proper maintenance is taken.

I have seen tons of Clips with Rolled ODO's (35k Kilos, and the steering wheel is worn to death by man handling.. gtfo). Also alot of SR's get reverted to stock before they are cut up and shipped. I would check metal flakes in the oil, and scaring on the cam lobes to judge engine wear.

The largest problem with SR owners, is not being able to bleed the air from the coolant system.
