correct. there is the thick battery cable that goes to the starter motor, and then the little wire goes to the starter solenoid. when you turn your key to the start position, that wire get's 12 volts which then engages your starter. so when you're jumping the starter solenoid wire with 12volts from the battery, yes it will turn the motor over.

if your s14 used to be an automatic then you simply need to complete the circuit that your "inhibitor" or "park neutral safety switch" breaks. OR if you don't want to go that route you can just take down the plastic from the bottom of your steering wheel, and the thick black with yellow stripe wire that's on the ignition switch (which is your start signal wire), you can tap a wire into that and run that wire to your starter solenoid. gl =] @@
