Actually, most of the work in an Otto cycle is used in blowing out exhaust, sucking in air/ fuel, and compressing the air/fuel mixture (the last stroke being ignition/ expansion, which is what creates power). Heat IS part of the energy loss, but not the single deciding factor.
Turbo's will actually add stress to the engine almost the same way a supercharger will. The turbine needs pressure to turn, and that pressure comes from the exhaust stroke. This pressure increases the amount of stress on the crank during that exhaust stroke.
So, it's not like turbo charging is perfect over supercharging. Although the engine's efficiency doesn't drop as drastically, it DOES drop... ideally the efficiency of the engine would stay the same as less work is needed on the engine's intake stroke, but we all know this isn't a perfect world.
