Could be something stupid that you are over looking.

I had a very similar problem with my first Nissan.  It turned out to be the little switch on the brake pedal that sends the signal for the lights to come on when you step on the pedal.  Sometimes they go bad and send the signal all the time....even when the car is off.

Next time you get out of the car, shut it off.  Go round to the back.  If your brake lights are on, it's the switch that is screwing you.

I'd check that before I worried too much more about the alternator.  The switch is a little bit of a pain to get at (on the brake pedal) but it should cost less than $20 and take about 20 minutes tops to replace.
