I actually liked my VLSD for drifting. I had people coming up to me all the time and asking what brand my diff was and whether it was a 1.5 or 2-way. It was always a strong locker, never gave me any problems.
The best LSD is one that lets you put the power down without hurting your cornering speed too much. A 2-way will generally reduce your cornering speed but allow you to get on the power without fear of the unloaded wheel spinning up. A 1.5-way will reduce the understeer that the 2-way induces and won't be quite as yummy for drifting.
I have an ATS Carbon 1.5-way and I LOVE it on the track. I've had to adjust my driving style to account for the increased understeer but I don't have inside wheel traction problems anymore and the power transfer is extremely smooth. It lets me make the most of my low power.
