If it's done right, nitrus isn't as dangerous as people make it out to be. What needs to happen to your car really depends on how much nitrus you're giving it. A small shot will be fine on stock internals, though something bigger will require such things as new pistons and rods to take the extra force. Make certain you have a reputable shop install your system, 'cause bad things will happen when it's not done right (know of somebody who's Jetta caught fire and burned to a crisp on his first shot of NOS). If you're really looking for solid and reliable performance, I'd recommend a turbocharger. It'll be a #### of a lot cheaper in the long run (no consumables), and they do tend to be safer.
