Steel is real! lol. I honestly have thought of the same thing. I am not a big fan of glass, but mostly everything I have worked on in the past is with mostly metal. A good way to make flares to to pie cut the fenders. Pull the strips out too where you want the fender to be, and fill in with metal sheet. Sounds complicated, but not as much as you would think. I did it on a 914 parts car, and it came out pretty well. A lot of the vintage scca guys do it, when they are in classes that do not allow fiberglass panels. Just a thought.
