Car OverHeats(radiator hole/fan?)

Well, my car overheats, it runs out of coolant and overheats. My question is how to fix it. There is a hole in the radiator I believe, there is steam shooting out like 8 inches left of the radiator cap. I tried to put silicone gel (the stuff you can use to glue things sometimes) over the hole in an attempt to plug it up. It didn't work...can anyone suggest anything different? or am I hosed and need a radiator? Also, there is a fan which is on the front of the radiator, i don't see it go on? what the hell is it suposed to do? is it the clutch fan?

anyways, i'm gettin a sr20det soon, so i'm wondering if i should just keep refilling the coolant untill then (about 1 month) or should i try to patch it up...and with what? any other risk or damages involved?
