Buy an engine stand and rebuild the block.. You can do it in your bedroom. The motor is done, it's obvious it needs a rebuild as the sound you're hearing is most likely rod knock or a spun bearing.
Tell him you'll buy the block and the harness for $400... You won't need the transmission or ECU and I'm sure you can find one somewhere else along the way...
Take the block to your backyard, spray it down with carb cleaner and degreaser, take some rags and a hose to it... Then get some ziplock baggies, take shit apart and label it.
LABEL EVERYTHING!!!
You shouldn't need to do any porting and if you do really only the intake side needs to be opened up.
Get a factory service manual and if you run into trouble feel free to ask questions... You'll learn alot doing this shit yourself and since it's just a learning project you won't feel rushed and you can just buy shit when you have money to spare.
