Usually if your gearbox is scratching as you put it in certain gears, going to synthetic will most likely make it worse.  The scratching or whatever your getting is most likely due to like you mentioned worn out synchros or something inside the transmission, and is definetely not the clutch.  Generally, you use synthetic on brand new/ very new transmissions since everything is in proper spec. Kind of the same theory that you don't use synthetic on a worn out engine with 300k miles on it, but you need thicker weight oil to fill in the gaps that have accumulated.  hope this helps, if it makes much sense.  Solution. Try changing the oil with just a high quality gear oil. Also, look at the oil you drained, if you notice little metal specs, means something is getting rubbed on.
