I think the only real constant allowing a modded car to not scream high school ricer a functioning roll bar. Not those damb Monkey Barz that rest on the back seat (saw two of those yesterday) or those pimp-tittly-tastic JDM units (Cusco, etc.) that don't pass SCCA tech - but a real live SOLO I approved roll bar. (I don't say cages b/c you have to be an idiot to have one of those on the streets).
I guess my point is trying to avoid looking like a high school ricer is virtually impossible these days. If you want to drive a modded car, you just have to suck it up and deal with that stigma. (Gunmetal is still my favorite wheel color.

Just cause something doesn't pass SCCA tech doesn't mean it sucks. Safety 21 bars won't pass SCCA tech but are FIA approved, which waaaay supercedes SCCA in my book. SCCA safety rules are governed as much by politics as safety.
BTW, those Cusco bars you mentioned are intended for hot lapping and street use and should be used as such.
