I'm pretty sure thats what happens with no shims or retainers. The fronts might not do it cuz they might have shims and retainers.
P.S. you did say it might be the diff. hence if he doesn't have one it would not be the problem. Any way, check out the shims and retainers and if he does't have any my guess would be the best place to find them would be the dealer.
