My hypothesis:
It creates to much back pressure and blocks air flow to the point that the expelled gasses would shoot back up to the turbo. I also back fired all the time. Probally due to the engine running rich to combat the backup of exhaust gas in the manifold

Dude, I've totally been wondering why my **** won't seal down there. I bet that could be it. Did you get a bigger cat? Did that help the seal? Mine has a perpetual exhaust leak down there. S.O.B!
