gear ring fitment

i was putting my old broken open diff back together to just know how to do it. the gear ring would not go all the way down on to the diff to thread the bolts down at all. so i had to grind the little lip down thats at the base of the diff to make it go down. it worked. i didnt grind it down so much that it just slipped down. i had to push it down realy hard and threaded the bolts in to make the gear ring go all the way down.

my question is, sence i did this, lets say i was goin to put that in my car if the diff was not broken. would this mess anything up? i grindded it very evenly and smooth.
