I don't exactly get motor oil. 20w50 is a 20 weight oil that will not thin more than a 50 weight at 100*C.
The hotter the oil gets, the thinner it gets. Somehow sythetics can make a 5w thin as much as a 30w?
Anyway.. you're right about the whole hot v. cold thing. I was really tired at 3:30am typing that, and got the backwards.
Also.. I still used 10w30 in my car before death, and will probably get a lower weight oil after the break-in (assuming the rings seat well, and I have good compression) to free up horsepower.
