There is all types of situations in which you would use the brake, but typically
if you would want to lock the rear wheels coming into a corner you would
A) aproach the corner overspeeding
B) Initiate drift early
C) push in the clutch
D) hold the lever
E) steer towards the apex
F) mash the gas
G) dump the clutch and release lever at the same time for the second half of the corner drift & corner exit
generally speaking yes ~ just like mashing on the (foot) brakes would stall the motor without pushing in the clutch however the hydrobrake is not an on/off switch. You can give it some finesse while the clutch is out to subtly modify the drift. Just like left foot braking its counterintuitive to touch the hydrobrake while you are on the gas but believe me it still works.
Taniguchi talks about this, he uses the side brake in a manner that does not lock the rear wheels so that the crowd/judges can not see the sudden change. The Drift flows better and appears more seamless & creates a look that is less abrupt or jerky.

Well yes, but when the rear wheel are locked without pushing the clutch there's no way the engine would continue to run unless you have a
really shitty clutch. I was just answering the question.
Completely locking up the wheels is the wrong way to go about initiating a drift anyway you lose momentum and the car's handling is greatly upset and will most likely send the car into an uncontrolled slide (possibly into a solid object) rather than a nice smooth controllable drift. Smooth driving techniques are paramount as Taniguchi states in his techniques. I wish they'd teach this sort of stuff in basic driving school I'm sick of dodging people who can't seem to properly control their vehicles.
But anyway back on topic. Buy from these guys they know what they're talking about and their shit is top notch.
