my oil drain line is about 1/2 inch.. pretty good sized...

Well... you're supposed to torque the head down, then back off all the head bolts, then torque it back down to its final torque spec. Doing so will seat the gasket, otherwise the gasket will expand and contract under a heat cycle, leaving you with a leaking headgasket.
If you think it's the turbo, pull the spark plugs. If they aren't oil fouled, it's gotta be the turbo.
