Yes, there is no amp on 96+ models and the door harness plugs are different.
If the wiring gets hot, the motor is seeing resistance, it's probably burned up. Hook a battery directly to the motor, but put a fuse inline on the positive lead. If it's indeed dead you could short the battery out while you're holding it.
