The black plastic box is just a resonator, it's there to equalize the pressure (for the AIV to work, air pressure in that box has to be higher than the pressure in the exhaust).

You clean the metal thing that the box feeds. You can take it out and take it all apart, but likely all you need to do is open up the top (there should be a clamp holding down a round cover.. undo the clamp and gently pop off the round cover). There will be a spring loaded valve attached to the round cover. Mine was all gummed up.
