Ordered a "custom" cute lil K&N filter for my new intake (cut the accordian tube, MAF, adapter, filter) and it all fits behind the radiator. It's got to lose hp over a true 'cold air', but I don't give a shit... I'm not running the turbo near the end of it's efficiency, so it can go ahead and breathe that hot radiator air.
... and the reason the stock setup won't work...
