Not a good suggestion. If you don't need the axle, why put the nut back on? If you hit it hard enough the nut will crown the axle's threads, making the nut impossible to get off.

I've only had one really stuck axle before, it was a set of R32 rear uprights, I put the uprights on top of a vice and used a sledgehammer. It still took maybe a dozen good hits. Using a hub puller isn't always optimal because you can pull the hub out of the bearing.
