Its not solely for flexibility, its main function is to avoid collapse under suction. The factory went this route b/c its necessary to have a flexible connection between the motor and factory air box. Without a doubt, an aluminum, smooth I.D. pipe, would be much better than the stock rubber hose, if you're not using the factory airbox. I'm not sure what that translates to in HP numbers... probably negligible with the stock turbo.
