in lots of ways techniques and skills required to drift and to adequately drive in snow are similar. one could call drifting's huge popularity on the west coast as in-part a result of the fact you lucky rust-free california car drivers dont get the great opportunity to slide the hell out of your car all the time for months out of the year.

somewhat. ironically it takes added skill to maintain a loss of traction (in dry conditions) which separates drifting from what you're talking about. drifting in the rain is fun and better for building confidence especially on a tight course!
