Mackerels don't get to 30 inches around socal or norcal or ever lol. But if you want to catch a full bucket load, your best bet is redondo pier, using a sabiki and pieces cuts of squid.

If your looking for coakers(No Tomcod aka"white croakers", spotfins and sargo ok) and keep and eat I would recommend shore fishing around newport - san diego beaches, avoid catching fishes from the harbor if you plan eating them.

Bait use for surf fishing is sand crabs, berkley's 2" sand worms, squid, ghost shirmps and mussels for the bait and wait method. If your the type to use lures I recommend a hard bait lc 110sp in sardine, plastics I would use a 3/4oz lead head w/ about any color big hammer plastic, drop shot I would use 2 1/2" basstrix or a zoom fluke and your choice size of sinker.

That's about everything you need to know to get you started on shore/surf fishing here in socal. Map out the areas you want to fish and google them so you can get an idea how to get there, any else feel free to pm me. GL out there
